FELL DESIRE @MP3.COM

Worship with hip action.  Sometimes we can really put on faces when it comes to adoring the One that we love.  Languid and casual, macabre and fetal.  But Fell Desire’s Love is just happy and grateful to the One who sets us free from our masks and other things that get glued to us.  Superglue always takes some skin when it comes off.  It’s not fun, but like Solomon said, ‘joy comes in the morning’.

Albeit a debut, Fell Desire has some tasty history.  Lead singer and founder Joe Albanese has worked with two other bands – Four Living Creatures and Elder.  All of the sound from the past has been carried right into Love.  And what happened between then and now?  Life.  But life seasons those with an inescapable desire to live, and causes the rest to fade into obscurity.  Roses grow best when manure is shoveled on them, and on the other side of winter, the blooms explode with vengeful wonder.  Experiences that give birth to lyrics like this:

“There weeps Rachel she takes no consolation
She longs to have the life drawn from her arms.
There sleeps Mary she’s nursing jubilation....

Every thing I know it has come undone
Every thing I love is gone”

turn into this in a week or two (or year or two):

“The first time I felt your love I knew that I’d come home. Times they changed and my faith failed. Take me back. To you I hail.

As many times as I have called that many times you’ve answered as many times as I have fallen you have lifted me.

I stand between a future that I can not see and a past that’s always been so comfortable to me.

Hello you’re wonderful; pleased to meet you you’re wonderful, I love you you’re wonderful, I remember you you’re wonderful.

Martha’s always bugging me She wants to tear me from your feet. You’re words they make my belly full, and sitting here is wonderful.”

So how does that define this particular plate?  Again, I’m calling Love worship with hip action.  What precisely does that mean?  Worship is an issue of communicating adoration to a Saviour and a Lord.  It’s an issue of meditation.  It’s an issue of returning back to God all that He has worked in our lives.

Love doesn’t preach.  It doesn’t spout a liturgy or a creed.  True, it is driven by creed.  And it is a living out of a daily liturgy, of sorts.  Nevertheless, the work on this CD is a work of clay on the potter’s wheel.  The songs are mindful and heart-filled – given for and inviting your consideration.

Love is not God packaged and in a can worked over like Apollo on Rocky so it can be made to submit to someone else’s religiously correct (or incorrect) agenda.  Love is a simple work, simply worked, and abounding in the personality that the Father has worked in Albanese and Fell Desire.

Now for the sugar to make the medicine go down – the beats and the notes.  Straight up rock is what the doctor has ordered here, as always.  Over the years, the musical taste and personality of Albanese has evolved and aged well, but it has changed little, if that makes sense.  From the Four Living Creatures to Elder to Fell Desire, the flavor is always driven by guitars and drums.  But with past fires, the dross has burned away;  the vocals are unpretentious and prayerful.  Live mistakes and the raw, organic feel of this brand of music are all part of the stew.  And lest you might think this CD is a pickup college or garage band or another Springsteen-Mellencamp salute, please shift gears.  The rhythms of Cat Albanese on Love throws a welcome Latino influence into the whole mix, and husband likes to jump and play in Middle Eastern, sitar-like pools.  And last but not least, there’s room for one more spot of color on this pallette.  A bit of techno studio work keeps jumping onto the stage for frequent, celebratory cameos.  Boy!  What a weird combination!  But that’s why i called it a stew.  Love is chunky and stripped down in a pot that’s cooking on an open fire – not a commercial microwave oven.  Serve yourself a bowl of tasty words and notes, and bon appetite!
